How To Take Care Of Your Yard After Hydroseeding

Home & Garden Blog

Hydroseeding is a great option when you need to put in a new yard because it is far less expensive than doing sod. When you hydroseed, here are 3 things you need to do to take care of your landscape maintenance so that the grass grows properly.

Do Not Touch

The first rule that you need to follow after hydroseeding is to not touch the yard at all. Because the seed has to germinate and grow into the ground, any disturbance can cause it to not grow.

In general, this means that you should not walk on the seed do any kind of yard work that involves heavy equipment around the seed. If you step on the seeds, then some can get pushed into the ground too far and will never grow. They should stay on the surface of the yard, and then they will germinate when you water the yard.

You have to follow this rule for the first few weeks, so be patient and do not let your children anywhere near the grass.

Weed the Yard

Second, you will also have to do a lot of weeding in the yard after the grass has started to grow in thoroughly. There are not weed seeds in the hydroseed, but the dirt in your yard will most likely contain weeds that will grow as soon as water is added.

Even though it will be tempting to go out into the yard during the early stages of growth, do not do this. You should wait until the grass is long enough to mow, which is usually about four inches in length. Before you mow the lawn, you will have to go out into the yard and pull the weeds by hand. Do not spray the weeds as this can be harmful to the baby grass.

You will have to continue weeding for several weeks after the grass has grown in because many weeds will still be making their way to the surface, so make sure that you plan on weeding a few hours a week until the weeds are all gone.

Water Regularly

Lastly, you need to water the hydroseed regularly so that the seed can grow properly. This means that you may need to water your two or three times a day during the first few weeks until the grass starts to take hold.

You do not need to water your yard for long periods of time though since flooding the yard is not wise. Instead, just water to keep the seeds wet, and they will grow better.

By doing these 3 things, you can grow beautiful green grass in your yard in just a matter of weeks.
